From Farm To Table
Sustainability Rice Cultivation Campaign
Royal Umbrella started the Sustainability Rice Cultivation Campaign with the objective to improve the Thai Hom Mali rice Farmers livelihood and their community sustainability. Farmers were recruited to be members of the sustainability rice farming program in 2012 to promote good agricultural practices. This involved not only the participation of farmers in Si Sa Ket and Yasothon provinces, but also the extension of farmer’s network to to Surin, Buriram, Roi Et and Phayao provinces. The program aims to promote Agriculture Practice under GAP PLUS (Good Agriculture Practice Plus). The system is certified by the Rice Department, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative and is also recognized for Quality Control, Food Safety, and Greenhouse gas emission reduction.
The program was very successful in securing for a reliable supply of high quality Hom Mali rice paddy as well as improving the income of farmers who joined the GAP co-operative. The co-operative farmer membership for Hom Mali rice has more than doubled over the past 5 years (from 400 farmers in 2012 to 3,500 farmers in 2017). The size of arable land farmed by the members has also multiplied 5 times to about 30,000 acres over the same period. The similar success is witness in the Japonica rice co-operative program too. Farmers are able to improve their crop yield by 5% after switching from traditional farming methods to the GAP methods that provided with training and support for.
